What can you do after your sex toy is broken or too old?

“I throw them in the general bin.”

How do you feel about it?

“Bad, but I don’t know what else can I do.”

What do you wish for?

......

This is the situation, no where in the world has a keep-running system to recycle used sex toys from customers. One by one, day by day, years by years, tons of used sex toys end up in general bins and all got burned.

How much toxicity it emitted? No data has found, but even the smallest vibrator has battery, motor, copper, iron, hard plastic and rubber parts. Imagine, just imagine.

The global sex toys market size was valued at USD 33.64 billion in 2020. It is expected to expand at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 8.04% from 2021 to 2028.

Report also shows that in the Netherlands, the amount of sex toys went up by at least 20%.  during the Covid-19 pandemic. One of the biggest adult product companies said they need to hire extrab employees because of the extra busy work.

One of the growing trends in the sex toys industry is the adoption of cutting-edge technology for the development of innovative products. Virtual gadgets, remotely connected devices, robots, immersive entertainment, and augmented reality. These are all electronic products.

As all electronic products, sex toys also has a life span. This depends on the quality of course. Most products are under one year warranty, some even has two years warranty, and some doesn’t.

Also as all electronic products, sex toys contains multiple materials, and need to be recycled properly.

Do we have the techniques to recycle a vaccum cleaner, a television or a remote control Then do we have the techniques to recycle sex toys?

If we are recycling vaccum cleaner, why we are not recycle sex toys?

The problem is there is no system and knowledge for it,  and there is a disconnection between consumers and processors. Consumers don’t know what to do, and the processors don’t get the matierals delivered to them.

The most important reason underneath is “PEOPLE DO NOT WANT TO TALK ABOUT IT.” Any topic around sex can be a taboo, even we think our society is open enough. But any problem which is harmful for the environment should be talked about and we need to find solutions.

Project ecoero.nl is trying to build a system about sex toy recycling. From the production, to the information, from psycholoy to resource.  We also want people to talk about it, find solutions together.

We wish with the system and the knowledge we supplied, more and more sex toys can be recycled, from the Netherlands to the world. We are also working with adult product producers and designers to make their products easier to be repaired and recycled.
