Walking circle and square, me
Experience space and architecture by being a shape
Concept:
Take some time, look at our city, our street and our house. What shapes do you see? For me, they are full of rectangle and sharp angles. These shapes are convenient, efficient and artificial.
How about the houses of people who have plenty of space? For example, people living in Mongolia prairie, Eskimo, or Indigenous peoples from hundreds years ago? Most of their houses are more round, or with softer angles.
What if I am a square or a circle, will I experience the surrounding environment differently? I will walk in the city, buildings, the forest and on the beach to feel it. By wearing the costume and some imagination, I become a shape to explore the relationship between human and the surroundings, the artificial and the natural.

Video Experience (better watch with sound)
Experience:
In general: The shapes do affect how I experience the environment a lot. It’s a mix of belonging and interacting. When I walk around, the round or square shape are in my view all the time. Surprisingly, there is a weird empathy come to my heart when I see same-shapes things.
In the building (KABK):
⬜ : I am so belonging here. Things are so sharp and square, just like me. It’s so fun to fit perfectly in every corner or the little space
between two lockers. When I make a turn, I go slowly, rigidly and turn squarely. Also, I always adjust myself to be parallel to other squares.
🔵 : I am taking a trip here. HUUU, everything is so square and sharp. I am so free and beautiful. Let me walk in the middle of every pass. Oh, there are some round light balls, we are friends.
In the forest:
⬜ : It’s so busy, while so empty here. It’s full of trees, grass, pond, and many plants. But only trees are big, and they keep quite some distance between each other. Oh, I can run free here. But nothing has similar shape as me, I am lonely.
🔵 : Oh, trees are round, just as me. well, although they are not perfectly round. I want to hug them, but I found out we can only touch each other a bit when we hug. I feel I belong here, and I can breath together with everything around me.
On the beach:
⬜ : I walk from human building to the beach. Surprisingly, human made shapes are still at the beach. I walk on the huge concrete square bricks until my feet on the sand. The belonging feeling slowly disappear. The movement of the sea is beautiful. I can’t stop notice that the Horizon is a straight line.
🔵 : I have the same colour as the sea, the wind links us together. The sea moves powerfully, and I move gently.
In the city (Den Haag)
⬜ : The city is too complicated, thousands of shapes are all coming to me. And it’s stressful. I walk fast to run away from the, when I arrive the white square city hall, the peace come back to me.
🔵 : The city is very complicated, layers, shapes, and people. As a little circle, I can blend in but I do not belong here. Walk, walk, walk, I see trees. It feels better to walk round them. But the round trees are arranged in straight lines, it’s so weird.
